Re: How To Learn About Individual Companies

Hello Johnny Reeves. Allan Pitts's infomation is very, very helpful. Thanks Allan. Johnny, I am an amateur. I get confused. But this seems to be true. There were many different 2nd Miss Cavalry. Sometimes they were even called something else. (1) 2nd Regiment State Cav (2) 2nd Battalion State Calvery "Harris." (3) 2nd Regiment Cavalry (4) 2nd Regiment Calary Reserves (5) 2nd Battalion Cavalry Reserves (6) 2nd Miss cav Jeff Davis Legion (which I think was renamed?) But in the beginning they had 3 Miss companies that came from Ashland Miss. From all of these were companies that were called (1) Kemper Dragoons (2) Lauderdal's cav (3) Louis White Rebels (4) Ruffin's Company (5) Pontotoc Rangers (6) Mooreville Blues (7) Mrs. Body Guard (8) Newton Rangers (9) Pontotoc Minute Men. And there were others. I found a William Reeves who served under Captain Sol Street. William Reeves is on the muster roll. He might be from your family, but he's not part of the Newton Rangers. Company B of the Newton Rangers belonged to the 2nd Cavalry Regiment. I checked the Reeves family name for Tippah County Mississippi. There are a boat load of Reeves there during the Civil War. Sometimes it helps to check the graveyards of other counties around Newton. I checked all of the People the Renick's married. Crump, Crouch, Burge, Duncan, Beal, Arty and others. Sometimes if you know who your Great Granddaddy, your Great, Great Granddaddy married, it can help lead you to the correct county of look for info. There are a lot of Reeves buried in Benton County Miss. Before the war, it was all Tippah County. The Yankees burned down Ripley Miss in 1864 and after the war Tippah County split and a large part became Benton County. Even some of the information on a headstone is wrong. I found a Renick who's headstone said he was in Company "E" but I found him on the muster roll of Company H. Then I realized that this Renick had to know the Crouch family, my mother's mother was a Crouch. James Crouch of Tippah County. Their company were called "Tippah Farmers." Thanks Allan for teaching me something, all that stuff, I had no idea! Some of these Renick's came to Mississippi from LaGrange, TN around 1802. William Jasper Renick of the 14th Miss inf. was from Tippah County and was married to a woman from LaGrange TN. Durring the war she was in LaGrange. William Jasper went AWOL 2 times during the war to go see his wife in LaGrange because she was dying. When she died, he gave himself up in Holly Springs, Miss. The CSA didn't punnish him. The Crouch brother's of Hickory Flat, Miss, road with Forrest. They lost everything during and after the war. One brother stayed and one brother left and went with his wife's family, the Pankey Family of West Tennessee, again, around LaGrange, TN. The point I am making, if you are looking for the correct Reeves, sometimes it helps to look to who they married. Sometimes he will be in his wife's family graveyard and not his families graveyard. Now to really confuse everything, Some or parts of the 2nd Miss Cav, were called or consoildated with, (1) 4th Miss Cav (2) 42nd Miss Cav (3) 8th Miss Cav. One of the 2nd Miss Cav, I think was called Baskeville Pope Walker Battalion Cav. How anyone can figure out all of this stuff is beyond me! I guess it is rocket science. Good Luck Johnny. Thank all of you guys from helping us learn. Thanks for your time. Keith, Peachtree City,Ga.
