Keith,

Have you actually seen the gravestone of John Renick? Does the inscription say "Company G, 2nd Mississippi Cavalry"? Is the inscription difficult to read? Does the gravestone look old or new? Yes, the possibility exists that the stone was placed on the grave many years after the death of John Renick, and the inscription was based on incorrect information.

From browsing census records, I am doubtful that the children of Mary Fleming were named Renick. The possibility exists that George A. Fleming and R. B. W. Fleming, who appear on the 1850 and 1860 census records of Madison County, were 2 of her children. On the 1850 census, Mary Fleming, born about 1862, is living in the household of George A. Fleming. He could be the "George Anson Renick" that you mentioned in your post.

George A Flemming -age 49-born S. Carolina
James M Flemming-age 19-born S. Carolina
John A Flemming-age 1-born Miss.
Mary Flemming-age 88-born S. Carolina about 1862
Rachael J Flemming-age 15-born Miss.
Julia C Flemming-age 8-born Miss.
Susan L Flemming-age 4-born Miss.
Sylvanus L Suggs-age 21-born S. C.

**It is of interest that John Renick of the 21st Mississippi Infantry, Company G, enlisted in Madison County, Mississippi, where the Fleming family was living at the the same time. I would not rule out the possibility of a connection without further research.
