Medical training for MS doctors

If this is "off topic", please direct me elsewhere.

I'm trying to find out where "surgeons" for the Confederate Army would have been trained in MS and what kind of training they actually received. I've been told that it was probably a one or two year "academic" program with no actual hands on experience. My ancestor probably attended Univ. of MS in Oxford and they did have a "school of medicine".

Thank you in advance for any help. This site has already helped me track down info on a relative that we'd been searching for for decades.
