Here's a little from the "The Darkest Days of the War.." by Peter Cozzens

When the Confederates took Iuka briefly, the 5th Missouri was ordered to post guard on the Hotel. Every room "filled with cheese and crackers, ham and hominy and molasses and whiskey...every guard provided for his own mess and jealously protect form all others."

Battery M, 1st Missouri Artillery (US) was shelling the town when it was being evacuated by the Confederates. They hit the hotel with one shot that exploded among the wounded there.
