The Mississippi in the Civil War Message Board

Re: Appointments and Promotions of Surgeons

If you have questions about specific officers, we may be able to answer some questions before you visit. For instance, you may find two possible index records for a staff officer, for example one in a Mississippi unit and another in Confederate General and Staff Officers. That would be a very common situation we might be able to help you explore.

Recently we were able to help someone who posted a query about his ancestor from Virginia, a Confederate medical officer. As an Assistant Surgeon and Surgeon, he had been posted to two or three different hospitals in Virginia. We discovered that he also had service on file with the 38th Georgia and an Alabama regiment in the Army of Tennessee before returning to Virginia on assignment to another hospital.
