Alan,

Thank you also for your reply. All of y'all are helping more than you will ever know. The cousins and I discussed this very thing last night in emails. It would have been impossible to take bodies into Union controlled Memphis for burial. We are also aware that for the most part only Union soldiers were moved to National Cemeteries.

Another thing that we discussed is that in 1861 there were several Confederate troops in Fort Pillow. It was a fort built by Confederates. We have a map of the Fort that shows that in 1864 there was a town, an Officers living area, a barracks area, a tent area, a steamboat landing and a horse lot. What it doesn't show is a graveyard. After the first battle at the fort, it was eventually abandoned by the Confederates and the Union troops took it over. The discussion was that from 1861 to 1864, people died there. There had to have been a graveyard somewhere. But where?

We also discussed the fact that soldiers were buried where they were killed and a large part of the burials were in mass graves.

I know that if Richard Cole was buried there, we will never know it for sure.

Hugh brought up another graveyard at Green's Chapel or Randolph. I find that on the map they are different places. Is one of these places where they buried the first battle casualties?

I am trying to leave no stone unturned. Thank you so very much for your help.

Nancy
