My earlier post was meant to explain why Jasper Newman enlisted in one unit but left for Virginia with another in a matter of weeks. Going to Virginia seemed to offer a better prospect of seeing combat than waiting for orders in Mississippi. Of course some recruiting officers were less circumspect than others and were not above using questionable means to fill up the rolls of their companies.
