Mr. Brickey: I enjoyed your recall of the account of your Ark. unit in Tupelo. East of town they must have been posted by old town creek. Even in my time before watershed lakes were built north and northwest of town, the bottom flooded. I would suppose that they would have moved on the high ground northwest of Tupelo around the few houses that there existed. I wanted to tell you where the house used as a hospital is located. From the Confederate monument at the Lee County Courthouse, you would go north one and one-half blocks, and the two story white house across from Gary Carnathan's law office, is the house that Carnathan thinks to have been used for the hospital during the war. I don't know how old the house that Carnathan uses as an office is, but he has shown me a period pocket pistol that he found on top of a floor support during renovation. Considering that at the end of the war there were supposedly only 6 houses left in Tupelo, this would be a good place for your Ark. unit to have camped. Your 1st Sgt. found only 1 of the many limestone shelves in the Tupelo area. I can tell you from first hand that when you hit this blue rock, a pair of post hole diggers will only bounce back. I can imagine that your Ark. unit had to use an ax or iron pole to break through it. I haven't taken the time to do any further work on our project but I will contact several local historians in the next couple of weeks and report back my findings.
