George, I have read Howell's account of the 3rd Mississippi but it seems ages ago and I couldn't recall that. I guess ultimately Gen. Lovell had no choice and I don't blame him for losing New Orleans. To my poor feeble mind the decision to gamble New Orleans' fate on a couple of river forts rest with the Richmond govt. itself.
