How could Johnston know what he was hearing if he could hear the battle? The battle was about 27-28 miles as the crow flies from his position, even if he knew what was going on, he couldn't get there in time. Sherman left Jackson about the time the battle started and only got as far as Bolton (about 16 miles) and by that time battle was over.
