Re: University Greys at Sharpsburg

Starke, my wife is from Cleburne, in Johnson County. Most folks who live there probably have no clue as to who their town is named for.

I had a distant relative in the Greys...Absalom Carr (1841-1911). From my research, he enlisted in April 1861. At Gettysburg, the 11th advanced in the first line of Pettigrew's division on July 3 - "Pickett's Charge." Under artillery fire that 'fairly melted away' their brigade, survivors of the 11th reached the stone wall. Their flag was captured by the 39th NY.
Of the total enrollment of 136 in the Greys, over 90 were killed or wounded. Following the war, none of the surviving young men who comprised the company never returned to the university.

BTW, the captured flag of the 11th is now in the MOC in Richmond.

Regards,

Robert
