Re: 5th MS Cav. Co. K - Samuel Garrett

The 5th MS Cav. was an amalgamation of various state / homeguard units after the fall of Vicksburg, so it would be extremely unlikely for anyone to have served both as an infantryman under Jackson and a cavalryman in the 5th MS Cav.

Now, this unit did fight under Forrest, including the massacre at Ft. Pillow ... so he does have a claim to fame, or infamy if you will. The 5th MS Cav fought dismounted, and was one of the units that stormed over the walls and participated in the slaughter of surrendering blacks.
