Re: Colonel William Harry Bishop

Thanks for carrying the torch, Eric, so we can keep the story straight. Col. Bishop's death at Franklin was a true loss to Mississippi, his family and our country. It is only fitting that his final resting place be with his friends, comrades and fellow soldiers.

Thanks to all who have contributed on this question.

There is no question about where or when he died at Franklin, that is documented by eye witness accounts. On the breastworks after passing through the Locust Grove on the west side of the Carter House after 7PM and probably before 9PM.

And as far as I am concerned, a transcription error 100 years ago will not prevent us from recognizing his final resting place at McGavock Cemetery.

A likeness would be fantastic, but I have an image in my mind of a selfless, fair and brave young man who gave his life for what he believed. We are all better for learning of his life and remembering him as he lived.

And remember why we do this..."Lest We Forget-The Immortal Seventh Mississippi".

So long as we speak or write their name or tell their story, they will live in our hearts forever....."
