John --

You may not be aware that there is an Alabama in the Civil War Message Board, which of course would be the best place to post your inquiry. If you mouse over the box on the left under 'Message Boards', you'll note message boards for almost every state involved in the Civil War. To make it just a bit easier, here's a direct link --

Ken Jones has a website (the first one listed in George's post) which include two specific sources for this regiment. Keep in mind that companies assigned to this regiment finished one year of service before this regiment organized. In this case, the "Coffee and Dale Grays" organized under Capt. John A. Minter at Rocky Head, Ala., mustering for twelve months at Montgomery on Sept. 7, 1861. John D. Hudson served as 2nd Lt. of Co. “H”, 40th Tennessee Regiment. Captured on April 8, 1862, at Tiptonville, Tenn., members were exchanged at Vicksburg, Miss., Sept. 20, 1862.

Lt. Hudson lost his right arm in the fighting on Lickskillet Road GA, July 28, 1864. He applied for a pension from Crenshaw County AL. Copies of his military service files and his pension are available here --
