I was wondering if anyone had any information on 20th Confederate Cavalry, Lay's ? I am looking for information on Company F. I wanted to see what county this particular company was raised in the history capsule from Dunbar Rowland's Dixieland I'll take my stand says half of it was raised around Jackson and Hinds.The 1rst of the unit was rasied in the district south of Homochitto Miss area. The main reason I am looking for information on this unit is I think my great great great grandfather Elias Newman may have been conscripted in this regiment since this regiment was mostly formed with conscripts.His full direct name does not appear in the soldiers and sailor system, However in these years when alot of these men were either conscripted or joined they abbreviated their name and yet some like one of my ancestors even changed his name to enlist somewhere else it is possible. In the roster of the 20th Confederate Cavalry (Lay's), there appears a E. Newman in company F ranked as a sergant.This has caught my attention as to this may be him ? The families saying is when he was conscripted for the service between age 50 and 54 at the time he never returned. When the wore broke out he is listed as a shoemaker in the town Monticello, Lawrence county Mississippi. Following the War Between the States, his wife Susan (Nolen)Newman and her seven kids left Miss. and came to Texas and settled in the state of Texas in 1870. I would greatly appreciate it if someone could offer any clues on where I could maybye search and find out at least what happened to him my mother has been looking for quite sometime and has found nothing.
