Unfortunately few if any wartime sources will help. That's because slaves who accompanied soldiers in the army were not carried on roll. Their names were recorded during the war only when paid for extra duty services, and then normally under first names only. Pension applications will be your best resource. Tennessee recorded pension applications by former slaves and freemen who served in Confederate ranks, but other states did not.
