April 13, 1861. Private S. M. Routh, age 21, enlisted at Jackson/Natchez, Mississippi in Captain W. T. Martin's Company (Adams Troop, Mississippi Cavalry, subsequently Company A, Jeff Davis Legion, Cavalry

November 8, 1861, From Headquarters of Gen. J. E. B. Stuart, Stephen M. Routh writes to President Davis for a recommendation for a position as A. D. C. on Stuart's staff. Recommended by both Secretary of War and President.

April 12, 1862. Was detached from Co. A, Jeff Davis Legion Miss. Cav., as courier to Gen. J. E. B. Stuart

May 5, 1862. Gen. J. E. B. Stuart mentions him as a private and of his escort, performing the duties ordinarily devolving on staff officers of rank and experience.

July 13, 1862, recommended for appointment as 1st Lieutenant and Adjutant of the Artillery of Gen. D. R.[?] Jones Division

September 25, 1862. Writes to President Davis requesting commission as 1st Lieutenant and assigned to duty at the Camp of Instruction at Monroe[?] Louisiana as recommended by Gen. J. E. B. Stuart.

November 12, 1862. 1st Lieut., Signal Corps, ordered to report for duty to Gen. R. Taylor at Alexandria, La.

October 9, 1863. Signs as 1st Lieut. & Chief of Signal Corps. Dist. of W. La., by order Gen. R. Taylor

January 2, 1864. Gen. Taylor, commanding Dist. of W. La., mentions Lieut. Routh, Signal Officer in charge of Station near Rodney, La.

February 19, 1864. Appointed Junior Captain March 24, 1864, to rank February 19, 1864, to report to Chief of Signal Corps.

October 10, 1864. Captured at Union Pa., La., near Rodney

December 17, 1864. POW forward to Fort Warren, Boston Harbor, Mass.

June 12, 1865. Swore Oath of Allegiance to the United States at Fort Warren. Home of residence Tensas Parish, Louisiana
