By the way, Stephen's post-war "job" as "public administrator" is from the census. I had mistakenly assumed it might be akin to "county executive" these days, or parish, in the case of Louisiana, but, from the casual research I've done, it appears to have been an official appointed by the court or a judge in connection with probate and related matters. Haven't looked into pay, etc. But that also brings up another point -- Stephen died at just 35 (1875). I wonder if his prison experience shortened his life, or what was the cause of his death at a young age.
