Hugh the records do not state where they were held first. Just mentions Joseph Dronant, Patrick Gray and John Cain all H Co 9th Connecticut POW 10/5/1863 Gray died 7/27/1864 grave 4096, Cain died 4/4/1864 grave 336. What is surprising is that Joseph Dronant who was a ex confederate who enlisted in the 9th in New Orleans Janaury 16 1863(9th took in 100 ex rebs in 1862 and 1863 in Louisiana)captured same day was paroled out of Andersonville November 15 1864. He rejoined his unit and stayed with the 9th till discharge in August of 1865. I was under impression that parolees could not take up arms again, am Im pretty sure the confederates did not know that he had changed sides. Either way it was a bloody day for the 9th and this is not listed anywhere in Dyers. I did find 2 union gunboats going to Bay St Louis and burning a Confederate tannery worth 20,000, but no infantry support is mentioned. So we have a 15 day campaign with casualties that there is no record of what so ever. Been working on the 9th about 15 years now. We just got the newest statue in years placed in Vicksburg to them at Grants Canal area. The 9th was an all irish unit so not to many letters diaries are out there, probably a high illiterate rate.I was hoping there would be confederate reports on this action. Do answer your question I have no clue where they were held beofore they were sent to Andersonville. I guess maybe Cahaba prison in Alabama would be closest. The 9th had a 1903 regimental but as I find most regimental written when the vets were old, it was missing many facts campaigns etc. Joe
