Mitchell, Dave here is the report from Company A Ninth Conn Vol from the Supplement to the Official Records
"Stationed at Proctorville Louisiana Sept - Oct 1863
Oct 20- This company left Proctorville Louisiana, where it is stationed, as part of an expedition for Saint Louis Bay Mississippi, to rescue four men of Company H Ninth Connecticut Voulunteers, that lay wounded. The expedition consisted of parts of A,G, and H Companies Ninth Connecticut Voulunteers amounting to 80 men under command of Captain Silas W Sawyer, Company H Ninth Connecticut Volunteers
They landed at the Bay, 7 am October 20, Captain Michael Williams landing first with six men of Company A. As soon as they landed, they were attacked by a party of Rebel Cavalry. Compnay A deployed as skirmishers and drove the Rebels back, killing seven men and mortally wounded a Captain Marshall, who was sent from Mobile to take command. We then marched to the where the wounded men lay guarded by 160 Rebel Cavalry who fled at our approach-leaving our wounded men after them. We then returned and embarked on our resective schooners."
Whats confusing in the report is they dont say how the 4 men from Co H were captured to begin with. Then I realized that the records I have for the 3 men taken prisoner stated they were caputed Oct 5 1863. So Company H must have been sent to Bay St Louis Oct 5 lost 7 men captured the non wounded 3 were sent off to whatever Pow camp before they went to Andersonville in 1864. The 4 wounded men were held in town and were rescued on Oct 20. I am going to purchase that book on the 15 Confederate thanks for the heads up on it. The 9th Conn spent 1862 to 64 broken up by companies garrsioning little towns Im sure they had plenty of run ins with the 15th Confederate Cav. Thanks for all the sources you posted. Joe
