Dave the regimental history of the 9th Connecticut was written in 1903 so the memory of these guys were fading it left out agreat deal of info. They mention that in early June 1864 they went on an expedition to West Baton Rouge and spent 2 days as guest on the platation of a Confederate Colonel Allen. The units were 9th Connecticut,30 Mass inf, 2nd and 6th Batteries Mass Light Artillery, 7th Vermont Inf and 4th Wisconsin Infantry. They landed at Ellis Cliffs on June 22 and the 9th Conn, 30 Mass Inf and 2nd and 6th Mass light artillery disembarked and engaged a confederate battery. The regimental stated that battery was annoying union ships as they passed by. States the battery departed when they came up upon it. On June 24 they skirmished at Hamiltons Plantation near Grand Gulf. June 25 they went up Bayou Pierre and marched to the rear of Grand Gulf which was fortified. Upon approach confederates troops departed on a train. They occupied a plantation name was not given and the artillery(union) battery raced the plantations mules and horses. They then had a 15 mile march to Grand Gulf, was rough march through wild cane fields.They reached Grand Gulf and boarded ships. Regimental states " when all our people were on board,the town was set on fire and as we left it,the blaze lighted up the countryside for miles" This is all I can find. I do have a large letter grouping I have to decipher from a Lt in the 9th if I find anything on Grand Gulf Ill post it.
