In addition to those two companies, Company B of the 21st Mississippi Infantry was mostly made up of Irish dock workers from Vicksburg, Mississippi. This company proved so troublesome that at the first opportunity, the commander of the 21st gladly released the company to become part of the 2nd Mississippi Battalion, which later became the 48th Mississippi Infantry.
