Vance appears on roll as 'present' through May 1, 1862. The next roll states, "Died May 5, 1862, at Corinth." Vance could have been killed in action as a picket on the lines near Corinth, or died suddenly due to disease. Either one is more likely than being present for duty on May 1st and dying less than a week later from the effects of a month-old wound.
