I am searching for the name and unit of the Confederate artilleryman who was killed in the Battle of Fort Pemberton, near Greenwood, Mississippi, on March 13, 1863. He was supposedly manning the 6.4-inch, 32-pound rifle when a Union shell exploded over the gun. The explosion wounded three, of which he was one; he died hours later. I am also trying to determine if he was the only fatality from the main engagements. According to General Loring's March 22, '63 report, only one fatality had occurred by that point, and the Union fired only three additional artillery shots at the fort after that. I know that four men (of the 33rd Mississippi Infantry Regiment, Company A) were killed in the fort on April 20, '63 when a torpedo that they were preparing exploded, but that incident occurred after the engagements.
