Thanks a million for the info. I will locate a Louisiana message board on which to post this question. The Benjamin McKittrick lead looks promising. After all, the other source didn't dredge up from nowhere the "McKittrick" name as having been the fatality.
I am writing a book about the Battle of Fort Pemberton and the Star of the West (the target of the first Civil War shot). I live in Greenwood about a mile from Fort Pemberton (and the resting spot of the scuttled Star of the West). This is a great story waiting to be told, and I have spent over three years researching and writing it. I should be through this week, finally. I am just trying to tie up a few loose ends, such as the name of the lone (?) Confederate fatality of the battle. Ironically, I have all of the names of the Union fatalities. I am now corresponding with Alan Whitehead, since the Mississippi Department of Archives suggested that I contact him. He wanted my email address so that we could correspond directly, and I sent it to him this morning. We'll see where this goes.
Have a good day.
