Re: District of Southwest mississippi and east Lou

"The Military District of Louisiana, embracing the city of New Orleans and its defenses, was established on Apr. 17, 1861. The district was merged on May 27, 1861, into Department No. 1 which included the State of Louisiana and the southern portions of Mississippi and Alabama, including Fort Morgan. In June 1862 Department No. 1 was merged into Department No. 2 (or Western Department). Early in 1861 the Louisiana State troops commanded by Maj. Gen. Braxton Bragg and by Col. Paul O. Herbert were designated the Army of Louisiana.

"Successive commanders of the district and department:

Maj. Gen. David E. Twiggs, Apr. 17, 1861.

Maj. Gen. Mansfield Lovell, Oct. 7, 1861."
