If memory serves, Col Liddell was wounded by a shell fragment the evening of Sept 16th. After their skirmish earlier that evening with the Pennsylvania Bucktails, Law's brigade went into bivouac that evening unfortunately aligned so that the Federal artillery to the east, across the Miller cornfield, could enfilade their lines. Most shells fell without effect, but unluckily for Col Liddell, a shell fragment hit him in the torso, inflicting a mortal wound.
