There's not a lot of detail available concerning the 2nd Mississippi participation in Seven Pines. As previously noted, Sam Hankins said the regiment primarily supported some Confederate batteries on 31 May. A. L. P. Vairin's diary recorded however that the head of their column unexpectedly struck a deployed Yankee regiment and was forced to retreat in some confusion after suffering several casualties. On June 1, Maj. John H. Buchanan's diary noted they were to support the "Tenn Briggade," while Vairin's account said there was very little fighting that day. One thing of interest was special note taken of a Federal observation ballon on June 1st. The 2nd Mississippi suffered 37 casualties at Seven Pines...6 killed, 28 wounded (7 mortally), and 4 captured including one of the wounded, so it is obvious they did engage in some fighting. Vairin noted he personally saw Gen Johnston fall after being wounded on May 31st during the deployment of the regiment.
