Gholson's Independent Cavalry Brigade

I am lookong for information ton verify the unit that my grandfather, John Thomas Miller served with.

The data I have is as follows:
The inscription on his Tombstone indicate he served with company "E" of the 36th Mississippi Cavalry.

His application for a pension also indicates that he served in that unit. The application also indicates that his conpany commander was a Captain Griffing and that the regimenntal commander was Colonel Goldston. It also shows that he enlisted on 1 April 1862, at Raymond, Hinds County, Mississippi and was discharged in Atlanta, Georga in 1865.

The Mississippi State Historical Archives in Jackson, Mississippi tells me that there was no such unit labeled 36th Mississippi Calvary in service during the Civil War.

I have written the National Archives in Washington, D. C. and their records do not find my grandfathers records in the Archives.

A short time back I saw on the Mississippi in the Civil War Message Board, a mention of a unit named Gholson's Independent Cavalry Brigade.

At some point in my research, I remember seeing the name Major General S. J. Gholson commanding the Mississippi State Troops, Calvary. I am wondering if the inscription on the Tombstone and the application for a pension could be in error and that possibly my grandfather could have been in Major General Gholoson's unit?

Does any one have a roster that might have my grandfather, John Thomas Miller listed?

I have been researching this for quite a few years and would greatly any information that could resolve it for me.
