The Confederate Signal Corps didn't come into existence for some time after the war began. This appears to be an early war, so it would seem to rule out that possibility.

We also need to think interms of what 'props' a photographer may have had on hand for soldiers on leave. People often assume that weapons &c seen in these images belonged to the man in the picture. Soldiers should have left their firearms in camp when going into town for fun and entertainment.
