From the notes I made in his book, Samuel Hawkins was a Corporal in Company E, Calhoun Rifles. August 1870 recorded as a RR Agent, age 24, Saltillo, Lee County, Mississippi. Married Willie E. Beal December 8, 1870. Died July 22, 1918, buried Beauvoir Veterans Home. There is a good picture of him in the book as a young man.

Samuel W. Hankins, age 16, enlisted as a Private in Company E February 24, 1862 at Guntown, Mississippi, promoted 4th Corporal, n.d., wounded July 1, 1863 at Gettysburg, gunshot wound left foot, subsequently taken prisoner, sent to DeCamp General Hospital, Davids Island, New York Harbor, on exchange, he was admitted to the Episcopal Church Hospital, Williamsburg, Virginia on September 15, 1863, furloughed September 22, appointed 3rd Corporal, n.d.
