Muster-in roll of Captain J. W. Swinney's Company, of Mis-
sissippi Volunteers, commanded by Colonel M. P. Lowrey, called
into the service of the Confederate States of America . . . for the
term of three years or the war, unless sooner discharged. . . .

No ball screws, wipers or screwdrivers on hand and much needed.
Stationed at Bardstown, Kentucky, July-August 1862.
Stationed at Tullahoma, Tennessee, November 1862-February 1863.
Stationed at Wartrace, Tennessee, March-April 1863.
Stationed at Tyner's Station, May-June 1863.
Stationed at Blythe's Ferry, Tennessee, July-August 1863.
July 7.— Left Tullahoma. Marched to Chattanooga, Tennessee.
Moved on the train to Tyner's Station, a distance of ten miles.
Remained at the latter place a few days. Marched to this place, a
distance of twenty-five miles.
Stationed at Missionary Ridge, Tennessee, September-October 1863.
September 2.— The company left Blythe's Ferry, Tennessee.
Marched to Harrison, Tennessee; thence to La Fayette, Georgia
via Chattanooga, distance twenty-five miles. Was ordered to
guard Dug Gap; thence to Pigeon Mountain.
September 10.— Skirmished with the enemy in McLemore's
Cove; no casualties in the company.
September 18.— In the morning we were ordered to rejoin the
main Army, then concentrated at Chickamauga Creek.
September 19.— Arrived on the line at sundown in the evening.
Chased the enemy from his works. Lost only one man killed.
September 20.— Was again engaged; loss one man killed and
eleven slightly wounded. All are [well enough] for duty now,
except two. Have been doing picket duty around Chattanooga,
Tennessee since the fight.
Station not stated, November-December 1863.
November 1.— The company was stationed on Missionary Ridge
and remained there doing picket duty and fortifying.
November 23-24.— It was ordered to Chickamauga Depot, four
miles. There it remained one night and then returned to Mission-
ary Ridge on November 24 near the center of the Army.
Remained until evening and moved to the right wing.
November 25-26.— It was posted near Chickamauga Creek but
did not participate in the action of that date. The company then
retreated with the Army to Chickamauga Station during the night.
Next day the company continued to retreat and reached Ringgold,
ten miles, during the night of November 26.
November 27.— Was engaged in the battle of Taylor's Ridge and
lost one man killed. The following night [marched] seven miles;
arrived at this point, Tunnel Hill.

Stationed at Dalton, Georgia, March-April 1864.
Have been in winter quarters since last muster. Nothing
transpired of note.
