Re: Temples/Temple
In Response To: Temples/Temple ()

This is what I have for Temples in Co. D 7th Regt. Miss. Inf. in the "Lest We Forget Roster":

"Temples, William J. 24, died at Okalona, MS Aug. 1862, unknown cause."[Note the difference in County of residence (Amite vs Marion) and date of death (Aug. 1862 vs Feb. 1864.) If he died in Okolona it was probably in a hospital where men were sent from the crowded conditions around Corinth after Shiloh. Many died from sickness after the battle between April and August from fevers and other ailments resulting from infection, unsanitary conditions and bad well water. The William J. Temples in the 7th Miss. would not have fought in the Meridian campain or the Yazoo River Expedition because he was already dead. The fact that this information has been combined must be due to another William Temples from Amite County also dying at Okolona in 1864. There were other units from Amite county who did fight in those campaigns.]

"Temples, Jacob 23, discharged 11-01-61"

"Temples, John R. 25, apparently discharged Dec. 4, 1861-Hadskey, (See Jones R. died unknown cause 12-4-61-Phillips)"

"Temples, Mr., mentioned in T.J. Rankin letter of Jan. 5, 1862 as being discharged for being unable to talk." [See end notes.]
[END NOTE "Lest We Forget Roster"

"Mr. Temples “

Temples, Jacob 23, discharged 11-01-61; Temples, John R. 25, apparently discharged Dec. 4, 1861-Hadskey, (See Jones R. died unknown cause 12-4-61-Phillips); Temples, William J. 24, died at Okolona, MS Aug. 1862, unknown cause.

This Mr. Temples may be a man not listed on any rosters since two were already dead of the three Temples’ listed and only William was still with the regiment in January 1862. It also seems odd that 23 to 25 year old men would be identified as “Mr. Temples” by someone their own age. For now we will add him to the “Lest We Forget Roster” with this footnote: "Temples, Mr., mentioned in T.J. Rankin letter of Jan. 5, 1862 as being discharged for being unable to talk. [See end notes.]"
