The Mississippi in the Civil War Message Board

Re: Henry Travis 11th TX Inf??? from Miss.

I posted this on N&V when part of your query was shared over there. So here it is again, with a little more info.

I searched the census records for Pike County, Mississippi and found a George W. Lea, age 30. Osyka is in Pike county, Mississippi and is also a railroad town between Jackson, Miss. and New Orleans, La., near the Confederate training camp of Camp Moore. It was very important during the war and is mentioned many times in the O.R., and would certainly have been a route taken from Texas to places east.

The 1860 census records for Montgomery, Texas, list a H. Travis, age 16, born in Mississippi along with his siblings, five born in Mississippi, 1 born in Louisiana, and the Mother born in Mississippi the father in South Carolina.

In November 1861 the three Texas Regiments (1st, 4th, and 5th) were assigned to Wigfall's Brigade and in camp around Dumfries, Virginia, on the west bank of the Potomac.
The 4th Texas has a Henry Travis in Company H. There are two Foster's in Company H, but the soldiers and sailors system doesn't list them as officers.

One of the 4th Texas' Company H's captains is listed as Captain Procter P. Porter.

Also there was a Captain F. H. Sapp, listed for the same company, and another captain assigned to this company that started as a 1st Lt, so it had at least modest turn over in Captains.

Historical transcription errors are common. I looked at 19th Century penmanship books, and according to who and how this person was taught to write, this certainly could be one. A capital P can look like a more modern capital cursive F and a small r look like a more modern small cursvie s. So Foster could be really be Porter if the hand writing was not perfect and he tried to use the style of the day.

Company H was raised by attorney Proctor P. Porter, in Montgomery, Texas, and marched to Red Top, Grimes County, Texas, where on May 7, 1861, they were mustered into the Confederate States service. From there they went to Harrisburg, Texas to prepare to transfer to Virginia then through Louisiana. Proctor P. Porter is also listed as a 2nd Lt., in the 4th Reg. of Tenn. Vols. during the Mexican War in 1847.
