All men dropped were not deserters. In the case of officers who resigned, they were dropped sometimes before their formal discharge was recorded. Also some men were dropped because they were disabled and could not return to their regiment. They may have healed from their original illness or injury, but were not fit to serve. Some men were also dropped after it was determined that they had joined another unit or had been conscripted.
