You might try searching the county probate and land records where Samuel lived. When he died, there may have been an estate settlement performed to settle debts. Or, you may find a deed where his land was sold or divided amongst the heirs--either of which would help narrow down a death date. Don't forget to check for a soldier's or widow's pension application. If the widow filed for one, it would certainly give his date of death. Check with the State Archives in Jackson, or click on the red and white box at the top of the screen to order copies here.

As for identifying his parents, did he have any siblings that lived into the 1910s or beyond? A state-issued death certificate typically lists the names of parents, and obtaining one for a sibling may allow you to back into Samuel's ancestors.
