Gen. Tilghman's Threat to Execute Soldiers

Does anyone have any other information on an incident at Jackson, Mississippi, on October 6, 1862 when General Tilghman threatened to execute some of his soldiers for supposedly having written a letter to Andrew Johnson while they were in prison? Who were the soldiers, what units were they serving in, etc. Below is the diary entry of a Confederate captain that mentions the event.

Jackson, Miss., Oct. 6, 1862. Drew percussion muskets without bayonets, oil-cloth knapsacks, haversacks and canteens. No side arms for officers. For a letter written to Andy Johnson some returned prisoners were arrested by Tilghman and threatened to be shot. They were subsequently released on denying authorship of the letter.
