Thanks for your post confirming long vs. short-term distinctions. During the Civil War, a 'detail' could mean assignment to temporary duty as a brigade or division teamster. On the other hand 'detached' could describe a soldier's assignment to a staff officer serving at a distant military post. Either way, the soldier in question remains on his company's roll.
