42nd Regiment, Mississippi Infantry

42nd Infantry Regiment was organized at Oxford, Mississippi, in May, 1862, and in June moved to Virginia with about 750 officers and men. Its companies were recruited in the counties of Carroll, Coahoma, Tate, De Soto, Panola, Lafayette, Union, Pontotoc, Marshall, Benton, and Tippah. For a time it served on garrison duty in the Department of Richmond, then was assigned to General J.R. Davis' Brigade, Army of Northern Virginia. The 42nd was active from Gettysburg to Cold Harbor, endured the hardships of the Petersburg siege south of the James River, and saw action around Appomattox. It lost forty-six percent of the 575 engaged at Gettysburg, had 8 disabled en route from Pennsylvania, and had 6 killed and 25 wounded during the Bristoe Campaign. The regiment surrendered 1 Lieutenant, 1 Chaplain, and 5 enlisted men on April 9, 1865. The field officers were Colonels William A. Feeney, Hugh R. Miller, and Andrew M. Nelson; Lieutenant Colonel Hillery Mosely; and Major Robert W. Locke.

May 14.— Muster-in roll of Captain L. G. Woollard's Company,
in the Forty-second Regiment (— Brigade) of Mississippi Vol-
unteers, commanded by Colonel Hugh R. Miller, called into the
service of the Confederate States in the Provisional Army, under
the provisions of the Act of Congress passed February —, 1861
by —, from May 14, 1862 (date of this muster) for the term of
three years, unless sooner discharged. . . .

ber 1863.

November 8.— Left camp on the Rappahannock at daylight and
marched in the direction of Culpeper. At about noon formed line
of battle. The company thrown out as skirmishers, engaged the
enemy's pickets. No one hurt. At sunset renewed our march in
the direction of Orange Court-House. Continued the march all
night.
November 9.— Reached old camp near Orange Court-House at 3
p.m.
November 26.— Firing [was] heard down the river. Received
orders late at night to be ready to move by daylight.
November 27.— Left camp at daylight in piercing cold. Marched
fifteen miles by 3 p.m. Army came in contact with the enemy
near Mine Run and [engaged in] heavy'skirmishing until dark.
Davis' Brigade was not engaged. Lay in line of battle all night.
[It was] cloudy and very cold.

November 28.— The regiment changed position three times.
Built three breastworks. [Engaged in] heavy skirmishing in the
evening [in] cold rain. Remained in the line of battle day and
night.
December 2.— The enemy disappeared under cover of night.
December 3.— [Were] ordered back to camp.
December 22.— Reached old camp near Orange Court-House
about sunset. Moved to a new camp and commenced building
winter quarters.
Stationed near Orange Court-House, Virginia, March-April 1864.
Stationed in trenches near Petersburg, Virginia, May-June 1864.
Stationed near Petersburg, Virginia, July-August 1864.
Station not stated, September-October 1864.
This company, with the other companies of the regiment,
remained on the front line near Petersburg.
September 29.— We moved by order of Major-General Heth to
Battery No. 45 and rested on arms.
October 1.— We engaged the enemy. We then moved to position
on the right. We remained, engaged on our works of defense.
October 27.— Our advance was driven back. Remained in posi-
tion strengthening our works and performing picket duty to this
date.
Stationed near Petersburg, Virginia, March 25, 1865.
May 7.— Organized at Senatobia, De Soto County.
May 12.— Proceeded to Grenada.
May 14.— Mustered into service. Since then, the history of this
company has been that of the regiment.
