As a general rule, early war MS units wore grey frocks, trimmed in red for infantry (the colors changed a couple of times, but red became the standard for the first year or so of the war), with horizontal red stripes of tape across the chest (corresponding typically to the number of buttons on the coat front), with officer's rank to be shown using the Federal shoulder straps, all topped off with a black, tricorn hat with a black ostrich plume. This is from memory, so don't castigate me! I think it's pretty accurate, though. -- Jim H.
