Half of towns in north Mississippi have/had big green signs from the "National Historic Register" that include the statement "burned during the Civil war" or "partially burned during the Civil War". I noticed last week that New Albany has a new sign that does not mention being partially burned. PC, I guess. Salem (old Tippah/now Benton County) was burned so completely that they changed the name to Ashland. Forrest had lived there from teens to mid-20s and as far as I know his family was still living there during the war.

I think that the Yanks burned every courthouse in N. Mississippi.
