He was undoubtedly buried by his comrades nearby where the regiment was encamped or in the city cemetery.

Sometime after the Vicksburg garrison surrendered July 4, 1863, the Federal troops re-interred all the Confederate soldiers they could find
and buried them in the Cedar Hill, Vicksburg City Cemetery, Soldiers Rest.

A Colonel presented the ladies of Vicksburg a listing of some 3,000 soldiers buried there. Over the years this list was lost. Additionally, the
original cyprus headboard markers disintegrated.

In the 1970s VA provided tombstones were obtained for about 2,000 known dead on the lists which had been recovered. These stones were laid
down in rows in sections by States.

Later in 1997, Jeff Giambrone of the Old Court House Museum, Vicksburg, came across another list of 77 troops, mostly East Tennessee men.
These stones were placed July, 1998.

On the original United Daughters of the Confederacy lists, two men, units unidentified, who died Dec. 29, 1862, were buried in grave numbers
561 and 569. Unfortunately, we today, have no idea of the locations by theses numbers.

I would suggest you contact the local Vicksburg Sons of Confederate Veterans Camp and work to obtain and place a VA tombstone for your man.
