Not many people realize that one of the attempts by Grant to bypass Vicksburg was successful. The Lake Providence route was actually successfully opened, but not enough steamboats had been provided by the war department to take advantage of the route. Recently I found out that the name of the first steamer to successfully pass from the Mississippi River into Bayou Macon was the "Sam Young." Does anyone have any data on this boat or know a message board that I would be able to utilize to find data on this boat?
