You can contact the state archives or your best bet would be to contact Alan Pitts from this message board and tell him your ancestor's name and his spouse's name. I suggest Alan because he will go the extra mile and look for alternate spellings of you ancestors names. Plus any charges he would incur in copying these records and mailing them to you goes to supporting these message boards.

FYI... Alan hangs out mostly on the Alabama message board. With any luck he will see this post anyway. I don't think he'll charge you anything just to find out if your ancestor filed for a pension. Jim Huffman may also be able to tell you if a pension claim exist. He also can be found here on the message board.
