Re: Civil War Officer and Enlisted Ranks

My question is in regards to if during an enlistment of an individual they were promoted to the rank of Sergeant Major, then when they Mustered out they held the
rank of Corporal.

Why the reduction in grade, when to my my knowledge the individual did not have any Medical or any other problems that he should have been reduced in rank.

The individual is my Great Grandfather: Michael H. Stoner, Company D, 11th Pennsylvania Cavalry.
Promoted to the rank of Sergeant Major, mustered out at the rank of Corporal.

Any information in reference to this inquiry would greatly be appreciated, or if there is another source I should contact please let me know.
