I agree with Jim Martin. Many men from Marion County joined the 7th Battalion Miss. Inf. probably joined in Jones County after trying to get attached to other regiments. The 7th Regiment had been formed in 1861 and had 2 companies from Marion County, but they were at full strength until Shiloh.

Several brothers served in both units.

Men all referred to their unit as 7th Miss. whether it was the regiment or battallion. in fact starting at Resaca in May 1864 the 2 units were in almost all the same fights through Nashville in December 1864. After the retreat to Mississippi, the regiment went to NC and the battalion went to Mobile. Check out the 7th Mississippi website for more on the 7th Battallion.
