Re: Sgt Shelton James Brown Co C 5th Inf. Regt

Brent --

Your post led me to believe that documents available would be faded, but it seemed worth a shot. IMHO these documents are as readable as anyone might expect. 3rd Sergeant S J Brown enlisted at Marion Station MS, Aug 2, 1862. He was absent on sick furlough for the first roll, dated Oct 24, 1862. However, he had returned from furlough by the next roll, dated Oct 31, 1862. He was present on the final two rolls dated Feb 28 and July 17, 1863. General Pemberton disbanded this regiment on the latter date, so the pay period you noted ended on July 17, 1863. His records include a descriptive roll which gives eye and hair color, complextion, height, occupation and place of birth.

Pardon me for sharpshooting, but "capture" usually means taken by force. General Pemberton surrendered his command (including the 5th Mississippi State Troops) on July 4, 1863. Sgt Brown was released on parole (which he signed) on July 10, 1863. He was present when the regiment was disbanded a week later, and came into Columbus MS to recieve his final pay. I hope this helps.
