R.:

Anxiously awaiting your letter not only because of the humanizing element such personal correspondence lends any history/story, but also because of the little details about the regiment and its brave patriots that such letters contain. for instance, we did not know that Phillips had his arm amputated.

Here's what I have in my summaries of the mentioned men's service:

Captain Merriman Pound -- 7-8/63 on detached service collecting absentees; served at Battles of 2nd Jackson (7/9-16/63) & Chicamauga (9/19-20/63) in command of Pound’s Battalion of Mississippi Sharpshooters (where he was severely wounded in the neck and hand); tendered resignation (which was rejected) 2/9/65 on account of cavalry appointment as Lt. Col. and election as MS State Representative; paroled Meridian at war’s end as captain in the 43rd [Note: Capt. Pound served the Confederacy with distinction and honor. Tragically, this hero’s wife, Sallie, was so destitute in 1900 that she had to file for a widow’s pension to support herself. This degradation is simply one more of the travesties visited upon the South because of the North’s baseless war of conquest.]; aged 42 at enlistment

1st Lieutenant Corydon E. Stewart -- never missed a day’s service with the regiment until his capture at Chickamauga, GA; 1-2/63 on detached service as recruiting officer; 3-4/63 on detached service at Haynes Bluff; served at Battles of 2nd Jackson (7/9-16/63) & Chicamauga (9/19-20/63) with Pound’s Battalion of Mississippi Sharpshooters; 9/18/63 missing after Battle of Chickamauga; 9/19/63 captured at the Battle of Chickamauga, GA; 10/6/63 POW at Kemper Barracks, Cincinnati, OH; turned over there to Capt. West of the 20th Kentucky U.S. Infantry; a perusal of Capt. Charles R. West's service record did not disclose any mention of Lt. C.E. Stewart's fate; further service unclear; however, Stewart survived the war, as he is known to have died in Louisiana years after the war ended

1st Sergeant Alfred W. Sandlin -- promoted/transferred out of regiment 1/27/63 to 3rd Lt. in Co. B, 1st MS Infantry; aged 30 at enlistment; born York Co., SC; captured Port Hudson, LA, at the fall of the garrison; was in various Yankee POW camps until war's end; died 1877; buried Center League Cemetery, Johnson Co., TX

4th Sergeant William H. Phillips -- wounded & captured Corinth, MS; discharged 3/9/63 (cause not stated, but probably due to disability arising from Corinth wounds)

Private William S. Dorsey -- died of disease 3/30/63 at home

Private John G. Mathews -- enlisted 8/25/62 Saltillo, MS; wounded Corinth, MS; present at last official muster 8/64; further service unclear

Again, thanks for the kind offer to share the letters. When you are able, please email me imaged of them to huffman1234@bellsouth.net and I will transcribe them and send the transcriptions to you, as well as post the transcriptions here on Jim Martin's wonderful MS CW BB!

Thanks! -- Jim Huffman, Co-Historian, 43rd MS Inf. Vols, CSA
