Nathaniel moved his family to Mt. Vernon and was stationed at Fort Sroddert for the war's duration. His brother Ebenezer was killed in battle according to my G-Aunt Kate and according to Frank (Bud) Cole Oliver and his sons helped build a brick wall at Fort Stoddert which still stands today. Nathaniel is given credit for building the flag pole.

According to the Washington County, Alabama 1907 Census of Confederate Soldiers, "Nathaniel John Smith was born January 12 1823 in Wayne County Mississippi. He entered service as a laborer under Captain White in 1861 in Ordnance Department at Mt. Vernon Arsenal and served to 1865."
