Great subject. After Shiloh men started returning from prisoner exchange and from wouned or sick furlough in the fall of 1862. While the Army of Tennessee was on the failed Kentucky campaign, these men were gathered near Knoxville, TN. in what was called a Convolesence Camp. Just prior to the army returning through the Cumberland Gap on their retreat, 1500 men from this camp were preparing to rejoin them to support their retreat. This was not necessary, however, because the rear guard actions prevented the federal forces from causing major disruption to the withdrawing troops. I have two separate contemporary accounts from men in Chalmer's Mississippi "High Pressure Brigade", but have not researched individual soldier records to see how they were treated on the regimental rolls. Nor have I attempted to see if there were records for thus Camp. Looks like another project to add to the list.
